What is a legal document assistant?
"Legal Document Assistant" is a defined role in California: a non-lawyer who, for compensation, helps members of the public prepare their own legal documents at their direction. California requires LDAs to register with the county and post a bond, and they may not give legal advice. Other states use different titles, such as document preparer, and Arizona has licensed Legal Document Preparers.

How to check one in California
Ask for the LDA's county registration number and expiration date; California LDAs must show this information on their ads and contracts. You can confirm the registration with the county clerk's office where they registered.
When to use a lawyer instead
If you're unsure which forms you need, your case is contested, or you need to know your rights, talk to an attorney. Many courts run free self-help centers, and local bar associations often run lawyer referral services.
